Light that follows the sun.
Tunable white, dimmed low, and scheduled right — circadian lighting makes a beautiful house feel alive. Paired with whisper-quiet motorized shades, the home reads the hour and the weather and adjusts on its own.
Matrix Digital Systems is an authorized Lutron dealer installing Lutron Homeworks QSX, RA3, Ketra tunable-white, and Palladiom keypads with motorized shading across Southern California and Central Texas — circadian scenes, astronomical sun tracking, and finish-matched keypads coordinated with the interior designer.
This page covers the control layer — keypads, scenes, motorized shades. If you're planning a new build or major remodel, our new full lighting design service covers the layer beneath it: CAD reflected ceiling plans, fixture specification, photometric layouts, warm-dim and circadian tuning, and landscape.
A keypad is worth ten apps.
Apps are fine. Keypads are better. A clean, labeled keypad in the right location — next to the bed, at the top of the stairs, in the primary suite — is the shortest distance between a person and the light they want.
We program scenes room by room with the homeowner: "Morning," "Evening," "Dinner," "Reading," "All Off." Each one dims fixtures, tunes color temperature, and cues shades — in one motion.

Motorized fabric, quietly done.
Our motorized shade work uses Lutron and Crestron platforms — quiet hardware, reliable long-term, and integrated cleanly with lighting and scenes. Fabric selection is coordinated with the interior designer; we handle the technology, they handle the aesthetic.
Every primary suite should have blackout shades on a schedule. Every glass-walled room should have a solar shade that closes when the afternoon sun does. These are small decisions, quietly automated.

Lutron, Crestron, or Savant for lighting — does it matter which?
Yes. Lutron HomeWorks is the default for any home above roughly 30 keypads — it's the most mature, the most reliable, and offered as a Lutron Certified system with documented commissioning. Crestron Zum and Savant lighting are excellent when the rest of the system already lives on those platforms. We rarely mix lighting and AV control on different brands without a clear reason.
What is tunable white lighting, and is it worth the cost?
Tunable white lets a single fixture shift from warm 2200K candlelight to cool 5000K daylight on a schedule. For the primary living spaces, primary suite, and kitchen, it's transformative — mornings feel awake, evenings feel calm. For closets, garage, and utility rooms, dimmable warm white is enough. We map it room by room during design.
How do motorized shades stay quiet and synchronized?
We specify Lutron QS or Sivoia shades with DC battery or hardwired motors — the quietest in the industry, around 36 dB. Synchronization is handled by the lighting system, not the shades themselves: every shade in a row receives the same command at the same instant, so they move together without the visible cascade you see on cheaper systems.
Can shades and lighting follow the sun automatically?
Yes — that's a core part of the design. Astronomical timing built into Lutron HomeWorks tracks sunrise and sunset for your exact address. Shades drop at solar noon on south-facing rooms to protect art and floors. Lights warm in the evening. The household adjusts to it within a week and never goes back.
Do tall windows and unusual shapes work with motorized shades?
Almost always. We've installed shades on 18'+ windows, angled clerestories, curved bays, and skylights. The constraints are fabric weight, motor torque, and pocket depth — all resolvable in design if we're brought in before the framing is closed. After the fact, options narrow.
Will the lighting still work if the smart home control system fails?
Yes. Lutron keypads communicate directly with Lutron processors over a dedicated wired bus, independent of the AV control system. Even if Crestron, Savant, or the home network is fully down, every keypad still controls its lights. Scenes triggered from the AV app fail back gracefully to manual keypad control.
Is Matrix Digital Systems a Lutron dealer?
Yes. We're an authorized Lutron dealer installing Lutron Homeworks QSX, RA3, and Palladiom keypads across California and Central Texas. We also install Ketra and Crestron Cameo lighting where the design calls for it.
What is circadian lighting?
Circadian lighting uses tunable-white or full-spectrum fixtures that shift color temperature across the day — cooler and brighter in the morning, warmer and dimmer in the evening — to support natural sleep and wake cycles. Ketra and Lutron Homeworks with tunable-white fixtures deliver this out of the box.
How do you handle Hill Country west-facing solar load?
Central Texas homes get astronomical shade schedules that close west-facing zones through the hottest hours of the day and open them back up at sunset, cutting cooling load without you touching a thing. Deep-summer scenes daytime-blackout rooms that would otherwise cook.
Can outdoor and landscape lighting be integrated?
Yes. Landscape and outdoor architectural lighting integrates with the same Lutron system as interior fixtures, so path lights, tree uplights, and pool lighting all follow the same scene structure as the rest of the house.
Are Lutron Sivoia motors really quiet?
Yes — Sivoia QS motors are among the quietest available, designed to be inaudible from across the room in normally furnished spaces. We align hem bars to millwork and cove details so light gaps read intentional, not sloppy.
Do you coordinate keypad finishes with the interior designer?
Yes. Lutron Palladiom keypads are available in engraved finishes — brass, bronze, nickel, matte black — that match the home's cabinet pulls and hardware. We handle keypad schedules alongside the millwork drawings.
